From a purely personal perspective, Jean Marie Le Pen is a good man. A true patriot. Well educated but still populist.
He was the youngest MP ever elected in France but yet he decided to end his term to serve in the Foreign Legion Paratroopers during the war.
So a man of value and a man of values.
From a purely political perspective there are 2 separated aspects :
- his ideas
- his role
First, his ideas. He is a hardcore civnat. Boomer nationalism but with good elements in it still. Good optics in general. Pretty visionary on some points. But yet nothing very uncommon : is ideas are basically the ones of BoJo or the LEGA. A bit more hardcore maybe.
Second, his political role : that's the worst point. He surely helped in creating a real far right party in France, that is pretty massive since the 1970s.
However he himself never really wanted to succeed in politics. He only wanted influence and fame. And not the power. So his overall role was pretty negative in the end, as nationalists lost a lot of time supporting a party that is not suitable to take power and will never seize it.
The FN was founded in the 1970s.
The AfD was founded in the 2010s
However you have more chance to see an AfD chancellor in Germany than to see more than 10 MP from the FN in French parliament.
I think it's a pretty honest and nuanced summary : based man, good intentions, but not enough ambitious and serious to take power.
